Do You Know the Rules—or Only the Profit Target?

Most traders remember the target. Fewer can explain exactly when a daily limit resets, whether open profit and loss counts, or what happens when several positions share the same exposure.

An evaluation is not merely a race to a target. It is a constraint system. Your strategy must operate inside every current rule at the same time.

LESSON 19 OF 24
12 MINUTES
PROGRESS 19/24

Start with the current official rules

Programme conditions can change. Account types can also have different conditions. Before planning or trading, verify the rules shown on the official Speed Funded website, terms and account dashboard that apply to your exact account.

Do not rely on:

  • A screenshot from an older challenge.
  • A social-media summary.
  • Rules remembered from another provider.
  • A number copied from a different account size or programme.
  • This lesson as a substitute for the current official terms.

If two sources appear inconsistent, pause and resolve the difference through the official information and support channels before trading.

Build a rule map before a risk plan

List every rule that could affect a decision. Depending on the current programme, this may include:

  • Profit target.
  • Daily loss or drawdown boundary.
  • Maximum loss or drawdown boundary.
  • Minimum trading days, if applicable.
  • Consistency conditions, if applicable.
  • Restrictions around news, weekends or overnight positions, if applicable.
  • Rules concerning automated systems, copying or account access, if applicable.
  • Eligible instruments, trading hours and prohibited practices.
  • The definition of a breach and the time zone used for daily calculations.

The words if applicable matter. Do not assume a condition exists—or does not exist—without checking the current programme.

Treat requirements as a connected operating system, never as isolated targets.

Translate legal wording into trading questions

A rule becomes useful only when you know how it affects an action.

| Official rule field | Questions to answer | Operating implication | |---|---|---| | Profit objective | What is measured, and when is completion confirmed? | Track progress without increasing risk merely because the target is close. | | Daily boundary | What value is used? When does it reset? Does open P&L count? | Know the exact point at which new risk must stop. | | Overall boundary | Is it fixed, balance-based, equity-based or trailing? | Recalculate remaining room using the stated method. | | Trading days | What qualifies as a day? Is a minimum required? | Do not manufacture low-quality trades to create activity. | | Consistency | Is there a concentration or distribution condition? | Measure performance distribution according to the current definition. | | Time/event restrictions | Which positions or orders are affected and when? | Add the relevant time-zone and event checks to the routine. | | Trading practices | What automation, copying, access or behaviour is restricted? | Use only expressly permitted tools and processes. |

Official wording

Copy and date the source.

Operational meaning

Define what is measured and when.

Preventive action

Set a check before exposure.

Evidence

Record where compliance is confirmed.

Translate the current official wording into observable actions without inventing values.

Balance, equity and open P&L are not interchangeable

Balance usually reflects realised account results after closed trades and adjustments. Equity generally reflects balance plus the current effect of open positions. The exact values and calculations shown by the platform govern the account.

This distinction matters because an account can have an unchanged balance while open positions move equity. If a rule uses equity or considers floating loss, watching balance alone may hide risk.

Similarly, a drawdown boundary may be:

  • Static: Its reference does not move upward with account gains.
  • Trailing: Its reference can move according to a stated rule.

These are general concepts, not a description of a particular Speed Funded programme. Read the current official definition for the account.

Balance

A booked account value after closed activity.

Equity

A changing value that may include open activity.

Boundary

May reference one or both under current rules.

Action

Monitor the exact official measure.

Definitions and boundary calculations vary; confirm the official method.

Find the reset clock and calculation window

“Daily” is incomplete without a time zone and calculation method.

Record:

  1. The official reset time and time zone.
  2. The same time converted into your local time.
  3. Whether open positions cross the reset.
  4. Which account values are captured or recalculated.
  5. Whether daylight-saving changes can alter your local conversion.

Do not assume that midnight on your phone is midnight for the evaluation.

Enter the official reset time.
Planning aid only; verify the official clock and daylight-saving treatment.

Separate the hard boundary from the operating boundary

A programme limit is a hard boundary, not a suggested amount to risk.

An internal operating boundary is a trader-defined point at which new exposure stops before the programme boundary is reached. Its purpose is to allow for uncertainty such as:

  • Slippage and spread changes.
  • Correlated positions moving together.
  • Open P&L changing quickly.
  • Fees, commissions or swaps where applicable.
  • Platform or connectivity delays.
  • A misunderstanding that still needs clarification.

No single buffer suits every strategy, instrument or account. Choose one only after testing the strategy’s loss distribution, execution conditions and current programme calculation.

No limits are suggested. Enter current official values and verify them before use.

Run the simultaneous-loss test

Looking at one order at a time can underestimate exposure. Ask what happens if every open trade and pending order reaches its planned adverse outcome before you can intervene.

Include:

  • Existing open losses.
  • Planned loss at each protective stop.
  • Correlated instruments.
  • Pending orders that could activate together.
  • Expected costs and possible execution difference.

Cancel or resize orders according to the written plan before aggregate exposure conflicts with an operating limit.

Create a rule-change protocol

Rules should not be checked once and forgotten.

Use a simple protocol:

  1. Verify before starting the evaluation.
  2. Save the verification date and source.
  3. Recheck before a new phase or account begins.
  4. Recheck after any official update notice.
  5. Pause affected activity if a material rule is unclear.
  6. Update the playbook and checklist when the rule is confirmed.

Chart Challenge

A technically valid setup appears, but the trader is unsure whether floating P&L counts toward the current daily boundary. What is the correct next action?

Challenge visual: choose the action supported by current rules and the documented process.

Remember this

The profit target is only one condition. A valid evaluation plan translates every current rule into a specific check, limit or action.
